What is Arsenic? This is the common question for the human being. What products we use in our normal lifestyle is Arsenic free? here we explain each and everything.
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that is found in rocks, soil, water, plants, and animals. Sometimes it can be found in some agriculture as well. Arsenic is usually divided into two separate compounds: Inorganic and Organic.
Inorganic:
This is where arsenic is combined with elements other than carbon, so products found in building products like lumber. This form of arsenic tends to be a lot more dangerous and recent studies show it can cause cancer.
Organic:
This is where arsenic is combined with carbon among other elements. These compounds are much less toxic and have not been linked to cancer. These compounds can be found in some seafood.
You can find arsenic in many different products you use on a daily basis. Some include:
- Pressure-treated lumber
- Pesticides
- Animal Hides
- As an additive to lead (great…)
- In some glass manufacturing
Believe it or not, arsenic has been used in some medicines back in the day. In the 1800s and early 1900s, arsenic was used to treat certain diseases such as syphilis and psoriasis. One form of arsenic is still used to treat a very uncommon blood cancer called acute promyelocytic leukemia. So maybe not all arsenic is terrible… jk, it is.
