How to Conserve Water

Hello! we are the contributor to How to Conserve Water and although this topic has already been discussed, we found that it is incredibly important and that the discussion should continue.

We all love water, right? Our bodies are made up of approximately 60% of water and our oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface. We have been told to drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day, but what happens when the water we are used to consuming every day suddenly disappears? With global warming and increased pollution, this scary thought may become a reality. Let’s talks about How to Conserve Water.

How to Conserve Water

In April of last year, California Governor Jerry Brown announced his state’s first-ever mandatory water restrictions, and a water ban was put into place in Vancouver, BC and its surrounding areas.

We as consumers have to be aware of this problem and have to make simple but effective changes in order to start conserving our very valuable water.

How to Conserve Water?

1. Stop purchasing bottled water! Instead, buy a reusable water bottle and fill it up with filtered water throughout the day. At the end of the day instead of dumping the leftover water down the drain, use it to water your plants.

2. Newer models of dishwashers clean more efficiently, meaning there is no need to pre-rinse. With older models, scrape your plates instead of rinsing. Only run the dishwasher and laundry machine when you have full loads. This can save you up to 3000 liters (or 1000 gallons) of water a month. Also, when purchasing new appliances, make sure they are an EnergyStar model, which uses less water per cycle. Most new laundry machines also have an option where you can match the water level to the size of the load. (Some machines do it automatically by ‘sensing’ the size of the load!)

3. Don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth, shaving or lathering your hands with soap.

4. When washing your dishes by hand, don’t let the water run. Instead, fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water.

5. If you are clumsy like me and you accidentally drop ice cubes on the floor or they don’t quite make it into your glass, don’t throw them in the sink. Throw them into your plants or flowers instead (indoor or outdoor).

6. Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 570 liters (or 150 gallons) per month.

7. For short time stays in hotels, reuse your towels. You reuse them at home, so why not at hotels! You can also leave a note requesting the sheets on your bed not be changed.

8. When you give your pet fresh water, don’t throw the old water down the drain. Use it to… you guessed it: water your plants, flowers, trees, etc.

9. When your kids want a fun day running through the sprinkler, kill two birds with one stone (metaphorically please!) by placing the sprinkler in an area where your lawn needs it the most.

10. While you run your water waiting for it to heat up, collect it in a bowl or pitcher and… ok, this is getting old now… use it to water your plants!
