So we’re in the middle of a drought and we thought it would be interesting to do some research into which companies have been really taking their water consumption seriously.
Ceres performed a study where they evaluated 103 companies in four particular water-intensive sectors:
- Food and Beverage
- Footwear and Apparel
- Oil and Gas
- Utilities
They had looked at measurement and disclosure of water usage in direct operations, assessment of water-related risks for their business, and the programs and targets to reduce water consumption. The results are pretty interesting!
First of all, the overall results were a little disappointing since last year 29% of the companies were performing in tier 1 and 2 and this year no companies were performing in tier 1 and only 14% were in tier 2.
But on the most interesting information, who were the top rated companies? Who should be praising instead of bashing these days? Well, first of all, surprisingly enough the Food and Beverage sector was the best performing overall. The worst sector? Footwear and Apparel.
The three most notable companies in Food and Beverage were Coca-Cola Company, Molson Coors, and Kellogg. Since 2004, Coca-Cola has improved their use of water by 20% percent!
Even though their sector was rated the worst, Gap and Nike are worth mentioning, as they are the only ones who stand out from their peers. Gap has identified manufacturers that are using too much water in their supply chain and have switched to better ones. As well, Nike launched a formal water program to help its suppliers address wastewater quality discharge uses. They currently have 793 suppliers participating!
