A recent study has shown that the cleaning products you are purchasing for your home are causing unnecessary air pollution. All cleaning products that were used for approx. 30 minutes cause higher volatile organic compounds. To break that down a little further and in simple form, these compounds have a higher vapor pressure and can therefor more easily turn from a solid or liquid to gas and air.
1,000 micrograms per cubic metre is the recommended limit for VOC levels in your house. To put that into perspective, the air tested throughout homes in Canada contained 1,200 micrograms of VOC before the experience, and 2,000 micrograms after using the cleaning products for 30 minutes.
As Canadians we typically spend more time indoors than outdoors. If your home is already poorly ventilated and building materials are already giving off VOCs, then the addition of these chemicals in your cleaning products is only making it that much worse.
Now you’re probably wondering why are VOCs so terrible? Well, first of all they create ground level ozone that contributes to air pollution. This in turn can cause asthma and other respiratory problems in both children and elders. VOCs also contribute to the worlds overall air pollution that is slowly changing our planet.
To limit these VOCs in your home and from our planet is simple. Stop purchasing over priced chemicals and switch to using vinegar or baking soda. Both are completely natural and can get the job done just as well as the leading brands out there. If you’re still not convinced, try to purchase products that list all of their ingredients or that state eco friendly on the label.
Happy cleaning!
