Staying on topic with drought, this year’s theme is attainment of food security for all through sustainable food systems. Drought day is held every year on June 17th with different themes and ideas on how to help protect our world.
Currently 805 million people in the world lack sufficient nutritious foods, which if you can imagine, is everyone one of eight people. Tackling hunger is a tough task, you have to take in to account economic development as well as natural disasters. More than 99.7% of our food intake comes from the land. If land does not have enough water to provide the crops it is producing then you are left with, well you guessed it, no crops. You see this happening more so in developing countries where water retention is poor. These people are then forced to survive on local foods.
So what can be done to help?
First, reforestation and tree regeneration will make a huge impact, so plant trees wherever possible! Make sure you’re saving water by harvesting rainwater, and cutting down on car washes or watering your lawn. Enrich your soil by planting and hyper-fertilizing. Lastly if you are a farmer or own farm land practice Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), which enables native sprouting tree growth through selective pruning of shrub shoots. The residue from pruned tress can be used to provide mulching for fields thus increasing soil water retention and reducing evaporation.
