Loblaws to Ban Microbeads from their Products

Loblaws has made its customers a promise. By 2018 it will stop all manufacturing household and cosmetic products that contain triclosan, phthalates or microbeads. Hooray! A company finally listening to environmental issues; it’s like they read our previous post or something?!

Loblaws president Galen Weston has been keeping tabs on emerging science and the opinion of their customers. The way he looks at it is that microbeads cause a life cycle of issues for the organization. They sell skincare that contains these microbeads and they also sell fish. So in turn their beauty products may ultimately impact their commitment to sustainable seafood. Smart logic if I do say so myself!

So what are these three ingredients you can watch out for in your products?

Triclosan: Found in most antibacterial soaps and body washes, this chemical is thought to contribute to antibiotic resistance. It is also toxic to bacteria found in water and certain types of algae.

Phthalates: This is the chemical that makes all your beauty products smell nice and pretty. Realistically you should not be worrying about how nice your face wash smells, the more natural the better! Studies have shown this chemical can interfere with the body’s endocrine system.

Microbeads: These tiny pebbles of plastic are harming our aquatic life and end up in the gullets of fish.

This isn’t the first large company to recognize that artificial is a turn off to customers. Do you remember the Subway fiasco and those yoga matt sandwiches you were eating? They were quick to change to a different, healthier ingredient. Hopefully more and more big names can hop on this bandwagon as well. As consumers we can do our part by not purchasing these products. Do not condone this abuse to our environment! One rule I’ve always stuck with is: If you can’t properly pronounce the ingredient, you probably don’t want it on your face.
