As promised in our last post we’ve compiled a list of easy and effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By taking these steps you’re helping protect our planet from global warming effects. So let’s get to it!
- Recycle: purchasing products with minimal packaging or recyclable packing can help reduce waste. You can save about 2.400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year if you recycle just half of your household waste.
- Drive Less: Plain and simple, the less you drive the less gas is put into the world. Walking or biking is a good form of exercise and not to mention all the money you can save on gas! Every gallon of gas you save can keep 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
- Use Less Heat: by adding insulation to your walls and installing weather stripping around doors and windows can lower your heating costs more than 25 percent. Turn down your heat while you’re asleep or away from the house as well! If you can install a programmable thermostat you can save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
- Replace Light bulbs: try using compact florescent light bulbs instead of regular ones. Not only can it save you money on your electricity bill it uses two thirds less energy and can eliminate 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gases.
- Use Less Hot Water: by setting your water heater at 120 degrees and buying low flow shower heads you can save about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Washing your clothing in cold water can help save an additional 500 pounds per year.
- Plant A Tree: trees absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. One tree can absorb approx. one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. Here are some websites if you’re interested in planting trees or donating to the process: http://www.plantabillion.org/, http://www.treesforthefuture.org/.
- Encourage Others: by sharing this information with others (friends, family, co-workers) you are taking all the steps to help eliminate greenhouse gases and save our planet!
Do your research and take any necessary steps to help eliminate these gases from our earth. If you have anymore ideas to contribute please post below!
