In short – yes. Sinkholes seem to be popping up around the world, everywhere. For some photos and locations of recent sinkholes check out this link: http://abcn.ws/1gqAiwo.
So, what is a sinkhole exactly? To put it in simple form, a sinkhole is a depression in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer of the earth. Sinkholes can vary in size from 1 to 600m both in diameter and depth and can literally happen at anytime making these very dangerous natural disasters.
For the most part sinkholes for naturally although in recent years sinkholes have been happening due to human activity. Naturally, a sinkhole will form because erosion or gradual removal of slightly soluble bedrock from percolating water will collapse the roof of a cave underground. Artificially, sinkholes will appear in urban areas due to water main breaks or sewers collapsing when old pipes give way.
Some notable sinkholes that have appeared over the years are:
- The Quattara Depression: This sinkhole is the largest natural sinkhole in the world; measuring 80km long and 120km wide.
- Berezniki: in Russia, this sinkhole began in 1986 and has continued to grow worse and worse each year. 10% of the world output of potash comes from this area and the sinkhole is dangerously close to destroying it’s main rail line. Uh oh.
- Guatemala City: This 30 story sinkhole resulted from a corroded sewage system.
- Sarisarinama: These holes in Venezuela are more beautiful than anything. IF you’re into distinct plant and animal species you can find them here! Each basin is about 350m in diameter and over 350m deep. No one is sure how these holes formed.
Watch for early signs that a sinkhole may be developing in your area. Possible signs include windows and doors suddenly becoming difficult to open, expanding foundation cracks, or cracks in your basement floor. Also look for water pooling after harsh rainfall, or trees and fence posts that suddenly start to lean over.
Have you ever experienced a sinkhole in your area or on your property?
