The Swift Life

Earth Day (◐‿◑ ) ❤

The very first Earth Day (April 22, 1970), started out as more of a celebration of our fantastic planet with a slight emphasis on pollution. It has since grown into a day where we raise awareness about a variety of issues regarding the state of our earth…climate change… global warming… and to, of course, teach kids the importance of the three “R”s (reduce, reuse, recycle!)

But, if people were really concerned about the state of our planet, wouldn’t every day be Earth Day?

Last year, the carbon pollution in our atmosphere was at a record high. A new study found that 8.8 million tons of plastic waste are found in our oceans annually. And this past winter, we saw first hand what global warming looks like, as we broke records for the warmest winter pretty much everywhere (save for the east coast of North America). Doesn’t reaaaally sound like we care about our planet that much.

So instead of just having one day a year where we regard and celebrate Mother Earth, and recommit to our grand plans to make a difference (whether pledging to save our natural resources, or say, various endangered animals) let’s just start with some basics. (If perhaps you already have these basics down, give us some comments on how you and/or your family incorporate sustainability into your every day life, we are always open to suggestions).

Believe it or not, the small things add up. You can make a difference by walking, riding your bike and even taking public transit. Recycle! Take reusable bags with you when you go shopping. Dry your laundry outdoors now that the weather is getting nicer. Make a shopping list and buy only what you need when grocery shopping.. you might be rolling your eyes at this one, but you’d be surprised at the amount of food the average household chucks in the trash (http://reut.rs/1De6Z8c). And, there are savings aplenty when you switch to energy efficient appliances and lightbulbs.

Let’s make Earth Day every day. ♡´(●‿●)`♡
