The Swift Life

Hydration: Staying protected this summer

With weather reaching highs of 40, it’s easy to become dehydrated. I know when I’m enjoying a day at the beach I very easily forget to drink my daily dose of aqua. It is said that for every pound of sweat that you lose you should be drinking a pint of water to replenish it. If you find yourself not sweating at all this can be a sign of heat exhaustion. Below are some signs that might mean your body is craving water.

  1. Bad Breath: because your saliva has antibacterial properties, if you’re not producing enough in your mouth you could be dehydrated and keeping people from coming close.
  2. Dry Skin: if you find your skin feeling tight and sometimes flakey this could be a sign that you’re not drinking enough water.
  3. Muscle Cramps: these are the worst! Have you ever had your calf seize up while you’re trying to sleep, the agony! If you’re experiencing cramping in any part of your body that means your muscles are thirsty.
  4. Food Cravings: when you’re dehydrated it’s hard for your body to properly breakdown nutrients. You will mostly crave sweets as your body is having a hard time with glycogen production.
  5. Headaches: your brain sits inside a fluid sack. If this sack is dehydrated the brain will start pushing against your skull, causing a bad headache.

The easiest way to check if you’re dehydrated is your urine (gross, I know, but everyone does it!). If you’re well hydrated your urine will be mostly clear with a tinge of yellow. When you dehydrated your urine will be very dark in colour. If you’re noticing an orange colour, you might want to contact your doctor.

Some different ways to make sure you’re staying hydrated throughout the heat are keeping a water bottle on your at all times. If you’re not into the plain taste, try spicing it up a little by adding in some fruit (lemon always helps) or calorie-free seltzers. If you’re a morning person, try replacing your coffee with tea. Finally, make sure you’re not only drinking water but getting it from different foods as well.
